The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a military alliance founded by the North Atlantic Treaty, signed in Washington on 4 April 1949 by twelve countries of North America and western Europe, including Canada. Its members pledge that an armed attack on one is an attack on all. Created to deter the Soviet Union, it expanded into central and eastern Europe after the Cold War.
