Cold War
The Cold War was the rivalry between the United States and its allies and the Soviet Union and its allies from the late 1940s to 1991. It divided Europe, including Germany, into opposing blocs and was fought through an arms race, propaganda and proxy wars in Korea, Vietnam, Africa and elsewhere rather than by direct war between the superpowers, which backed client governments around the world. It ended with the revolutions of 1989 and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
