National Union (Portugal)

1930–1974 · 20th century · Also known as União Nacional

The National Union was the single legal political organisation of Portugal's Estado Novo, founded in 1930 by António de Oliveira Salazar. Rather than a mass party, it served to organise support for the regime and to select candidates for the National Assembly. It was renamed People's National Action in 1970 and dissolved after the Carnation Revolution of 1974.
