Vortigern

5th century · 5th century · Also known as Gwrtheyrn

Vortigern was a 5th-century British ruler who, according to Gildas, Bede and the Historia Brittonum, invited Saxon mercenaries under Hengist and Horsa to defend Britain, only for them to rebel and seize land. His historicity and dates are debated. Welsh genealogies made him the ancestor of the rulers of Gwrtheyrnion, whose name means 'the land of Gwrtheyrn', the Welsh form of his name.
