Pillar of Eliseg

9th century · 9th century

The Pillar of Eliseg is a stone cross shaft near Llangollen in north-east Wales, raised in the 9th century by Cyngen ap Cadell, king of Powys, in honour of his great-grandfather Eliseg. Its now largely illegible Latin inscription traced the royal line of Powys back to Vortigern and the Roman usurper Magnus Maximus, making it an important source for early Welsh kingship.
