Cyngen ap Cadell

d. 854 · 9th century · Also known as Concenn

Cyngen ap Cadell was the last king of Powys of the old royal line, ruling from about 808 until 854. He raised the Pillar of Eliseg near Llangollen in honour of his great-grandfather Eliseg, who had won back land from the English. Under pressure from Mercia, he died on pilgrimage to Rome in 854, and Powys passed to Rhodri the Great of Gwynedd.
