Elisedd ap Gwylog

8th century · 8th century · Also known as Eliseg

Elisedd ap Gwylog was a king of Powys in the first half of the 8th century. He is known chiefly from the Pillar of Eliseg near Llangollen, erected by his great-grandson Cyngen ap Cadell, whose inscription records that Elisedd won back land from the English with fire and sword. The nearby Valle Crucis Abbey takes its name from the pillar.
