Bede

c. 673–735 · 8th century · Also known as the Venerable Bede, Saint Bede, Venerable Bede

Bede was a Northumbrian monk and scholar of the twin monastery of Wearmouth–Jarrow. His Ecclesiastical History of the English People, completed in 731, is the principal source for the history of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and their conversion, and his works on chronology popularised dating events from the birth of Christ. Known as the Venerable Bede, he was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1899.
