Vorort

The Vorort was the leading or presiding canton of the Swiss Confederation before 1848, which convened the federal Diet and conducted common business between sessions. Zürich held the role for most of the time from the fifteenth century to 1798. After 1815 it rotated every two years between Zürich, Bern and Lucerne until the federal constitution of 1848 created a permanent government.
