Maria Theresa

1717–1780 · 18th century

Maria Theresa was the only female ruler of the Habsburg lands, inheriting them in 1740 under the Pragmatic Sanction. She lost most of Silesia to Prussia in the War of the Austrian Succession but held the rest, and reformed taxation, the army and schooling. She was queen of Hungary and Bohemia, and her husband Francis I and son Joseph II were emperors.
