War of the Spanish Succession

1701–1714 · 18th century

The War of the Spanish Succession was a European conflict fought from 1701 to 1714 over who should inherit the Spanish throne after the death of the childless Charles II. France supported the Bourbon claimant Philip of Anjou, while Britain, the Dutch Republic and Austria backed a Habsburg candidate. Philip V kept the throne, but under the Treaty of Utrecht Spain lost its European possessions, a key stage in the Spanish Empire's decline.
