War of the Supremes

1839–1842 · 19th century

The War of the Supremes was a civil war in the Republic of New Granada, present-day Colombia and Panama, from 1839 to 1842. It began as a revolt in Pasto against the closure of small convents and spread as regional strongmen, the 'supreme chiefs', rose against the government of José Ignacio de Márquez. The government won with generals Pedro Alcántara Herrán and Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera, and the conflict shaped the later Liberal and Conservative parties.
