Panama Railroad
The Panama Railroad is a railway across the isthmus of Panama between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, built by an American company between 1850 and 1855 and the first railway to cross the Americas from ocean to ocean. It carried large numbers of travellers to and from California during the Gold Rush, at the cost of thousands of workers' lives. Later owned by the French and then American canal companies, it was rebuilt alongside the canal and still runs between Colón and Panama City.
