Panama City
Panama City, on the Pacific side of the isthmus, was founded by Pedro Arias Dávila in 1519. Silver from Peru was shipped there and carried across the isthmus to the Caribbean fairs, making it a key point of Spain's Atlantic trade. Henry Morgan sacked it in 1671, and it was rebuilt on a new site. It is now the capital of Panama.
