Arnulfo Arias

1901–1988 · 20th century

Arnulfo Arias was a Panamanian physician and nationalist politician who was elected President of Panama three times and removed by force each time. His first term brought a new constitution in 1941 and measures against foreign minorities before he was deposed later that year; he was removed again in 1951. Elected in 1968, he was overthrown by the National Guard after eleven days, opening the military era of Omar Torrijos.
