Guillermo Endara

1936–2009 · 20th century

Guillermo Endara was a Panamanian lawyer and politician who won the presidential election of May 1989 as the opposition candidate, only for Manuel Noriega to annul the result. He was sworn in on a US military base as American forces invaded in December 1989 and served as president until 1994. His government dismantled the military, rebuilt democratic institutions and handed power to an elected successor.
