Panama Canal
The Panama Canal is an 82-kilometre waterway across the Isthmus of Panama linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. After a failed French attempt, it was built by the United States between 1904 and 1914 and opened on 15 August 1914, using locks to lift ships over the isthmus. It remained under American control until it was handed to Panama on 31 December 1999.
