Isthmus of Panama
The Isthmus of Panama is the narrow strip of land between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean that links North and South America. Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed it in 1513, and it became a key route for Spanish silver. Scotland's Darien scheme tried to found a colony there in 1698–1700 and failed disastrously, and the Panama Canal was opened across it in 1914.
