National Covenant

1638 · 17th century

The National Covenant was a declaration signed in Edinburgh's Greyfriars Kirk from 28 February 1638 and then across Scotland, binding its signers to defend the Reformed religion against the innovations of Charles I, especially his new prayer book and the power of bishops. It united most of the nobility, clergy and burghs against the king, led to the Bishops' Wars and helped start the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
