Declaration of Arbroath

1320 · 14th century

The Declaration of Arbroath is a letter dated 6 April 1320 from the barons and community of Scotland to Pope John XXII, asking him to recognise Robert I as king and Scotland as independent of England. It famously declares that the Scots would remove even Robert if he submitted to the English, and that they fought not for glory or riches but for freedom. It is the most celebrated document of Scottish history.
