National debt

Also known as funded national debt

A national debt is the total borrowing of a state, typically funded through government bonds. Britain's funded national debt, developed from the late seventeenth century, was a pillar of the fiscal-military state that financed the British Empire's wars and expansion. The First World War multiplied this debt and transferred Britain's creditor status to the United States, weakening imperial finances.
