Person
Arnulf, Duke of Bavaria
Arnulf, called the Bad, was duke of Bavaria from 907 to 937, the son of Margrave Luitpold, who had fallen against the Magyars at Pressburg. He defended Bavaria against Magyar raids and made it a powerful stem duchy, and in 919 some Bavarians proclaimed him king before he submitted to Henry the Fowler in 921. His nickname came from monastic writers angered by his seizure of church lands.
