Philippe Bunau-Varilla

1859–1940 · 20th century

Philippe Bunau-Varilla was a French engineer who worked on Ferdinand de Lesseps's failed Panama canal and later lobbied the United States to buy the French company's assets and build the canal in Panama rather than Nicaragua. After helping to organise Panama's secession from Colombia in November 1903, he acted as the new republic's envoy and signed the Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty before the Panamanian delegation reached Washington.
