Philippe de Rullecourt

1744–1781 · 18th century · Also known as Baron de Rullecourt

Philippe de Rullecourt was a French adventurer and soldier who styled himself baron. On 6 January 1781, during the American War of Independence, he landed a small force in Jersey and took Saint Helier by surprise, forcing the lieutenant-governor to sign a surrender. British troops and militia under Major Francis Peirson counter-attacked, and Rullecourt was mortally wounded in the Battle of Jersey.
