Francis Peirson

1757–1781 · 18th century · Also known as Major Francis Peirson

Francis Peirson was a British army officer who commanded the troops in Jersey when a French force under Philippe de Rullecourt seized Saint Helier on 6 January 1781. Disregarding the surrender signed by the lieutenant-governor, the 24-year-old major led regulars and militia against the invaders and won the Battle of Jersey, but was killed at the moment of victory. Copley's painting The Death of Major Peirson commemorates him.
