Pedrarias Dávila

c. 1440–1531 · 15th century · Also known as Pedro Arias Dávila

Pedrarias Dávila was a Spanish soldier and colonial governor who arrived in 1514 as governor of Castilla de Oro, on the Isthmus of Panama. His rule was marked by violent raids on Indigenous peoples and by rivalry with Vasco Núñez de Balboa, whom he had executed in 1519. He founded Panama City the same year and later became governor of Nicaragua, where he died in 1531.
