Republic of New Granada

1831–1858 · 19th century

The Republic of New Granada was the state formed by present-day Colombia and Panama after the break-up of Gran Colombia in 1830–1831. Its government at Bogotá faced the War of the Supremes of 1839–1842, a civil war of regional leaders during which Panama briefly broke away as the Free State of the Isthmus. In 1858 it was reorganised as the Granadine Confederation, forerunner of the United States of Colombia.
