1819 · 19th century

The Congress of Angostura was the assembly convened by Simón Bolívar at Angostura, now Ciudad Bolívar, on the Orinoco, which opened in February 1819. Bolívar's address set out his ideas on republican government, and the congress elected him president of Venezuela. In December 1819, after his victory at Boyacá, it proclaimed the Republic of Colombia, known as Gran Colombia, uniting Venezuela and New Granada.
