Battle of Boyacá

1819 · 19th century · Part of the Spanish American wars of independence

The Battle of Boyacá was fought on 7 August 1819 near Tunja in present-day Colombia, where the patriot army of Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Paula Santander defeated a royalist force after crossing the Andes. The victory opened the road to Bogotá, ended Spanish rule over most of New Granada and led to the proclamation of Gran Colombia later that year.
