Battle of Bouvines

1214 · 13th century · Part of the Anglo-French War (1213–1214)

The Battle of Bouvines was fought on 27 July 1214 near Lille in Flanders, where Philip II of France defeated the army of Emperor Otto IV, Count Ferrand of Flanders and Renaud de Dammartin, allies of King John of England. The victory secured French control of Normandy and Anjou, effectively ended Otto's reign and so weakened John that his barons forced Magna Carta on him in 1215.
