Battle of Ramillies

1706 · 18th century · Also known as Ramillies · Part of the War of the Spanish Succession

The Battle of Ramillies was fought on 23 May 1706 near the village of Ramillies in Brabant, in present-day Belgium, during the War of the Spanish Succession. An allied army under the Duke of Marlborough routed the French and Bavarian forces of Marshal Villeroi. Within weeks most of the Spanish Netherlands, including Brussels and Antwerp, fell to the allies, who recognised the Habsburg claimant Charles III there.
