Battle of Rancagua

1814 · 19th century · Also known as Disaster of Rancagua · Part of the Chilean War of Independence

The Battle of Rancagua was fought on 1–2 October 1814 in the town of Rancagua, south of Santiago, between royalist troops sent from Peru under Mariano Osorio and Chilean patriots under Bernardo O'Higgins. After a siege in the town square the patriots broke out and fled, and the royalists reoccupied Santiago. The defeat ended the period known as the Patria Vieja and began the Spanish Reconquest of Chile, which lasted until 1817.
