Battle of Rangiriri

1863 · 19th century · Part of the Invasion of the Waikato

The Battle of Rangiriri was fought on 20–21 November 1863 in the Waikato, New Zealand, during the British invasion of the Waikato. General Duncan Cameron's troops attacked a strong Māori defensive line between the Waikato river and a lake and suffered heavy losses in repeated assaults. The next morning the defenders raised a white flag and about 180 were taken prisoner, opening the way to the King movement's centre at Ngāruawāhia.
