Battle of Raphia

217 BCE · 3rd century BCE · Part of the Fourth Syrian War

The Battle of Raphia was fought in 217 BCE near Gaza during the Fourth Syrian War, between Ptolemy IV of Egypt and the Seleucid king Antiochus III. The Ptolemaic army won, with native Egyptian troops playing a significant role. The battle encouraged the Ptolemaic Empire to recruit more Egyptians into its army, which in turn altered the balance of power within society.
