Tāwhiao

c. 1822–1894 · 19th century · Also known as Tūkāroto Matutaera Pōtatau Te Wherowhero Tāwhiao

Tāwhiao was the second Māori King, succeeding his father Pōtatau Te Wherowhero in 1860. During the invasion of the Waikato in 1863–1864 his people lost their lands, and he withdrew into the King Country, where he led his followers for nearly twenty years. He made peace with the government in 1881, travelled to England in 1884 to seek redress from Queen Victoria without success, and founded the Kauhanganui council.
