Battle of Ōrākau

1864 · 19th century · Part of the Invasion of the Waikato

The Battle of Ōrākau was fought from 31 March to 2 April 1864 in the Waikato, New Zealand, the last major battle of the British invasion of the Waikato. About 300 Māori under Rewi Maniapoto, including women, defended a hastily built pā against a much larger British force. Refusing to surrender, they broke out and many were killed. The battle ended organised resistance in the Waikato.
