Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru, on the central coast in the Rímac valley. Francisco Pizarro founded it in January 1535 as the City of Kings, and it became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru and the centre of Spanish power in South America, with the University of San Marcos from 1551. San Martín proclaimed Peruvian independence there in 1821.
