Captaincy General of Chile

1541 CE – 1818 CE · capital Santiago

Spain's southernmost colony in the Americas, a frontier realm defined by a long war against the Mapuche and later the birthplace of the Chilean republic.

Origins

Pedro de Valdivia led an expedition from Peru and founded Santiago in February 1541. He extended Spanish settlement south, founding Concepción and Valdivia, but was killed by the Mapuche under Lautaro at Tucapel in 1553. The territory was governed as the Governorate of Chile within the Viceroyalty of Peru.

Rule and society

Chile's governor was also captain-general because of the Arauco War against the Mapuche. After the Mapuche victory at Curalaba in 1598 destroyed the southern towns, the frontier settled on the Biobío river with a permanent army. The Royal Audiencia sat at Santiago from 1609. The economy rested on wheat, tallow and livestock sold to Peru, worked on large haciendas. The Bourbon reforms made Chile a captaincy general more independent of Lima in 1798.

Decline and legacy

A Creole junta took power in 1810, opening the Patria Vieja. Royalist forces regained control in 1814, but José de San Martín and Bernardo O'Higgins won at Chacabuco in 1817 and Maipú in 1818, when Chile declared independence as the Republic of Chile.
