Battle of Curalaba

1598 · 16th century · Part of the Arauco War

The Battle of Curalaba was fought on 23 December 1598 in southern Chile, when Mapuche warriors under Pelantaro ambushed and killed the Spanish governor Martín García Óñez de Loyola and his escort. The victory set off a general uprising that destroyed the Spanish towns south of the Biobío river. It fixed the frontier between Spanish Chile and the Mapuche for nearly three centuries.
