Túpac Amaru

c. 1545–1572 · 16th century

Túpac Amaru was the last Sapa Inca of the Neo-Inca State of Vilcabamba, ruling from 1571 to 1572. He succeeded his brother Titu Cusi Yupanqui and broke off negotiations with the Spanish. Viceroy Francisco de Toledo sent an expedition that took Vilcabamba and captured him in 1572, and he was beheaded in the main square of Cusco. His name was later taken by Túpac Amaru II, leader of the great Andean revolt of 1780.
