Túpac Amaru II

1738–1781 · 18th century · Also known as José Gabriel Condorcanqui

Túpac Amaru II, born José Gabriel Condorcanqui, was a kuraka of the Cusco region who claimed descent from the last Inca ruler, Túpac Amaru. In November 1780 he led a great rebellion against Spanish colonial abuses that spread across the southern Andes. He was captured in 1781 and executed in the main square of Cusco, but he became a symbol of indigenous resistance and Peruvian independence.
