Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement

1982–1997 · 20th century · Also known as MRTA

The Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) was a Marxist–Leninist guerrilla group active in Peru from the early 1980s, smaller than and rival to the Shining Path. It is best known for seizing the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima in December 1996 and holding dozens of hostages for four months, until Peruvian commandos stormed the building in April 1997, killing all fourteen rebels. The group never recovered from that defeat.
