Viceroy of India

Also known as viceroy

A viceroy is an official who governs a country or province in the name of a monarch. The title is best known for the Viceroy of India, the head of British government in India after 1858, who governed the Raj with the Indian Civil Service. Similar offices existed in the Spanish viceroyalties of New Spain and Peru and in Portuguese India, and the term is also used for provincial governors in other empires, such as the Viceroy of Kush under Egypt's New Kingdom.
