British Raj

Also known as Raj, Indian Raj

The British Raj was the system of direct British crown rule over the Indian subcontinent from 1858 to 1947, after the East India Company's rule ended following the rebellion of 1857. It was headed by a viceroy and administered by the Indian Civil Service. The Raj was the centrepiece of the British Empire, and India's independence in 1947 marked the beginning of its dissolution.
