Wankaner State

1605 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Wankaner

A Jhala Rajput state of Kathiawar on the Machhu river, known for its palaces and for rulers prominent in Indian public life.

Origins

Wankaner was founded in 1605 by Sartanji, a member of the Jhala ruling house of Halvad (later Dhrangadhra State), who took lands on the Machhu river in northern Kathiawar.

Rule and society

The Raj Sahebs ruled a territory of cotton and grain villages, paying tribute to the Gaekwads and Junagadh before British protection after 1807. Amarsinhji, who reigned from 1881 to 1948, built the Ranjit Vilas Palace and modernised the administration. It was an eleven-gun salute state.

Decline and legacy

Wankaner merged into the United State of Saurashtra in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960. Its royal family remained active in politics, and Digvijaysinhji served as a Union minister.
