Dhrangadhra State

1742 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Dhrangadhra

The senior Jhala Rajput state of Kathiawar, which moved its capital from Halvad to Dhrangadhra in the 18th century.

Origins

The Jhala Rajputs had ruled in the Jhalawad region of northern Saurashtra since medieval times, with their seat at Halvad. Around 1742 the ruler moved the capital to Dhrangadhra, giving the state its later name; Wankaner, Limbdi and Wadhwan were branches of the same clan.

Rule and society

Dhrangadhra was a 13-gun salute state of the Kathiawar Agency ruled by a Raj Saheb. Its economy relied on cotton, salt from the Little Rann and the local sandstone, still sold as Dhrangadhra stone. The rulers were reformers in education and administration in the early 20th century.

Decline and legacy

Mayurdhwajsinhji Meghrajji III acceded to India and Dhrangadhra was merged into the United State of Saurashtra in 1948. He later sat in the Indian parliament; the town is in Surendranagar district of Gujarat.
