Wadhwan State

1630 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Wadhwan

A Jhala Rajput state of Kathiawar on the Bhogavo river, one of the branches of the Halvad ruling house.

Origins

Wadhwan was founded in 1630 by a cadet of the Jhala house of Halvad, the line of Dhrangadhra State. The town had an older history as a medieval fortified centre.

Rule and society

The Thakore Sahibs ruled a territory of cotton villages, paying tribute to the Gaekwads before British protection after 1807. A British civil station grew up beside the town, later Surendranagar, and the railway made the area a cotton market. It was a nine-gun salute state.

Decline and legacy

Wadhwan merged into the United State of Saurashtra in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960. Its old town is now part of Surendranagar.
