Atahualpa

c. 1502–1533 · 16th century · Also known as Atawallpa

Atahualpa was the last Sapa Inca of the Inca Empire before the Spanish conquest. A son of Huayna Capac, he defeated his half-brother Huáscar in the civil war of 1529–1532, but in November 1532 Francisco Pizarro captured him at Cajamarca. Although he paid a huge ransom in gold and silver, the Spanish executed him in July 1533.
