Viceroyalty of Peru

1542 · 16th century

The Viceroyalty of Peru was the administrative unit of the Spanish Empire created in 1542 to govern most of Spanish South America, with its capital at Lima. Its silver mines, especially Potosí, made it a principal source of imperial revenue. Accounts of the Spanish Empire describe it, alongside New Spain, as one of the two primary administrative units of Spanish America.
