Huayna Capac

d. c. 1527 · 16th century

Huayna Capac was the Sapa Inca who ruled the Inca Empire at its greatest extent, from about 1493. He campaigned in the north, crushing the Caranqui and Cayambi and making Quito a northern capital. He died around 1527, probably of smallpox brought by Europeans, and the war between his sons Huáscar and Atahualpa weakened the empire before the Spanish arrived.
